Our Native built Everglades cabins are perfect for those looking for a stay in the Everglades. Many travelers don’t have tents or camping gear that they travel with and are looking for a different experience than a traditional hotel room. Our Seminole Indian Chickees offer a place to rest and relax in nature. Our Chickee cottage offers a view of the swamp and open grassland prairies with solar fixtures and shutter windows. Neither of the swamp cabins, the chickee hut or the lake side mini bungalow have running water, but both are situated very near restrooms and hot showers located within the Trail Lakes Campground bathhouse.
The chickee hut is a great opportunity for large families and groups to set up their own ‘camp’, with the chickee hut as a primary get together place and a focal point of the camping gathering. The chickee hut has a great deck just a few steps down from the entryway, which is GREAT for enjoying the Florida Everglades beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Enjoy coffee or cocktails from the deck and watch bird flocks flying overhead morning and night across the campground.
Our chickee huts are styled after the original native American chickee huts and are built by locally residing Miccosukee native Americans. The thatched roofs featured in the chickee hut accommodations are more like functional art. Hundreds of years of perfecting the process of weaving the palm fronds produces spectacular, intricate roofs on these huts. The thatched roofs serve a couple of different important purposes: 1) they are nearly impervious to the weather and 2) they BREATH, a unique feature of these roofs. They allow air to pass underneath and through, reducing significantly the sometimes extraordinary heat during the Florida Everglades summer months.
Go Glamping! Camping mixed with glamour – it’s a new international trend in eco travel and our native Chickee Eco lodges are the ideal way to experience it.
